SOCRadar highlights critical vulnerabilities targeting Dutch organizations — with a significant focus on the banking sector — amid a surge in ransomware attacks, phishing threats, and DDoS incidents.

Amsterdam — The Netherlands, renowned for its progressive digital economy, is facing a growing wave of ransomware attacks. According to SOCRadar’s latest report named the Netherlands Threat Landscape Report 2024, Dutch entities experienced 186 unique ransomware incidents in the past year, with 62 attacks specifically targeting the country. Prominent ransomware groups like Cl0p, LockBit 3.0, and ALPHV Blackcat have been particularly aggressive, underscoring the high stakes and sophistication of these cyber threats.

Huzeyfe Onal, Co-Founder at SOCRadar, emphasized, “The rise in ransomware attacks on Dutch entities is very alarming. Organizations must move quickly to adopt a proactive and comprehensive approach to cybersecurity to stay ahead of these evolving threats.”

Significant focus on banking

Dutch organizations are also grappling with a surge in phishing attacks, which numbered 3,077 in the last year, with a significant focus on the banking sector. The prevalence of stealer logs, which compromised critical data for thousands, further highlights the vulnerabilities within the Dutch digital infrastructure.

SOCRadar’s analysis identified 72 distinct threat actors targeting Dutch enterprises, predominantly on the dark web. The retail trade sector was hit hardest, accounting for 14.81% of dark web activities, followed by electronic shopping and mail-order houses, and finance and insurance industries.

DDoS Attack statistics are off the charts

In an unprecedented rise, the Netherlands witnessed 48,178 DDoS incidents last year, including a landmark attack involving 23 vectors and achieving a maximum bandwidth of 590 Gbps. These statistics illustrate the intense and escalating cyber assault landscape in the country.

“DDoS attacks are becoming more sophisticated and harder to defend against. It’s imperative that organizations are alive to the fact that they need to implement multi-layered security measures to safeguard their digital assets.”

“The ongoing evolution of DDoS tactics requires implementing stringent monitoring and resilient defense mechanisms to safeguard essential infrastructures and ensure uninterrupted service delivery. The DoS resilience module developed by SOCRadar is a sophisticated tool designed to assess and fortify the resilience of business infrastructures to DoS attacks,” Huzeyfe Onal added.

Organizational resilience needed against cyber threats

Considering the findings of the Netherlands Threat Landscape Report 2024, SOCRadar emphasizes the importance of staying informed about the  latest threats and trends, implementing a combination of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and endpoint security solutions for robust protection. Regular data backups, patch management, and continuous employee training are essential to prevent and mitigate ransomware infections.

Advanced anti-malware solutions and traffic analysis tools are also recommended to detect and prevent data theft and mitigate the impact of DDoS attacks. By adopting a proactive and comprehensive approach to cybersecurity and utilizing Cyber Threat Intelligence, organizations can effectively respond to immediate threats and prepare for future challenges. Collaboration among cybersecurity professionals, supported by robust CTI frameworks, is essential for safeguarding digital assets and maintaining organizational resilience against cyber threats.
