The Detailed Drug List published by the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency has been subjected to comprehensive analysis. According to the report, the average selling price to wholesalers for original drugs is 8,724 TL, while for generic drugs, it is 1,623 TL. It was observed that both averages doubled over one year.

TURKEY - The Detailed Drug List, published every Friday at the end of the working day by the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency, is closely followed by pharmaceutical companies, pharmaceutical depots, and pharmacists. The list, which is updated annually due to reasons such as the inclusion or removal of new drugs, fixed exchange rate changes, and changes in reference countries, offers insights into the Turkish pharmaceutical market. ECONiX Research, which set out to uncover these clues and determine how the Turkish pharmaceutical market changes year by year, has published the 2023 Detailed Drug List Analysis.

81% Price Difference Between Original and Generic Drugs

Using the Econalix medical market analysis platform and the Econalix database, the research, which examined a total of 5,840 drugs, looked at whether drugs were original or generic, their selling prices to wholesalers, and reference pricing. According to the report, the average selling price to wholesalers was calculated as 8,724 TL for original drugs and 1,623 TL for generic drugs. The price difference between the two types of drugs was determined to be 81.39%.

ECONiX Research Management Team member Öznur Seyhun shared, "At ECONiX, our Econalix platform allows us to track the weekly and daily changes of the Detailed Drug List. Analyzing the latest list on December 29, 2023, we found that the average selling price to wholesalers was 529 Euros for original drugs and 149 Euros for generic drugs. The difference between these two values was found to be 71.79%."

Greece is Most Frequently Used as a Reference for Drug Pricing in Turkey

The analysis revealed that Greece is the most referenced country for pricing original drugs, accounting for 20.5%, followed by France, Italy, and Spain. Germany and Switzerland were prominent among the non-official reference countries, with 9.5% and 3.8%, respectively. On the other hand, Switzerland had the highest average selling price to wholesalers for original drugs at 22,672 TL, while Spain had the lowest at 930 TL. A similar situation was observed for generic drugs.

ECONiX Research consultant Ekin Begüm Özdemir mentioned, "Greece leads as the reference country for generic drug pricing, with a share of 26.8%. Greece is followed by France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Germany and Switzerland also appear among the non-official reference countries."
