Mars Logistics continues its growth in road and rail transport. Having invested 65 million euros in its fleet in 2023, the company plans to invest approximately 70 million euros in its fleet in 2024.

TURKEY - Gökşin Günhan, Board Member Responsible for Road and Rail Transport at Mars Logistics, made an evaluation of 2023, stating, "Throughout the year, we serve nearly 8,000 customers from various sectors. In 2023, 44% of our business volume was generated by the automotive and subsidiary industries, and 23% by the textile sector. The top three countries for our export transportation were Germany, Spain, and France. With 1,200 export trips and 1,100 import trips per week, we have surpassed the annual freight number of 250,000. Mars Logistics, which will close the year 2023 with a turnover of 529.5 million euros, aims for a 15% growth in euro terms in 2024."

"The number of railway trips will reach 40 per week in 2024"

Emphasizing that the zero-emission target is an important item on their agenda and that they increase their investments in railway lines every year, Günhan said they plan to strengthen their railway lines in 2024. "In 2023, we conducted trial trips for the Halkalı-Romania line. We will start scheduled trips in April. We continue our work for another railway line to Central Europe in 2024. Currently, we organize a total of 32 trips weekly on our Halkalı-Luxembourg, Halkalı – Czech Republic, and Luxembourg – Trieste lines. In 2024, we will increase this number to 40."

100% electric railway transportation supports sustainability goals

One of the most important projects they will carry out in 2024 is 100% electric railway transportation, Günhan said, "95% of our lines have the capability of electric operation. We will invest in electric tractors that can be used in transferring loads from road transport to railway and then from railway to road transport to their final destination. After implementing this investment, we will be able to offer a 100% electric railway transportation service. This project, which is one of our most important strategic investment plans for 2024, will support our sustainability goals by reducing our environmental impact and helping to increase our operational efficiency. The electric tractors we invest in will be long-range. Initially, we plan to purchase 50 units in the second quarter of 2024."

"Over 100,000 vehicle departures per year"

Günhan said that they make over 100,000 vehicle departures annually in import and export by road and rail, "We are also making software investments to improve and develop processes. We have software that allows our customers to track their loads, make orders and reports; access dispatch, instruction, and KPI performance reports. The portals we offer to our customers according to their loads can be customized. Every day, we develop our software according to customer demands and requests, and we have added a Job Order Application for our drivers to use. In 2024, we plan to include the document structure in the Job Order Application, ensuring all drivers can use this application."

The domestic partial distribution network will expand

Günhan mentioned that expanding the domestic partial distribution network is also among the goals for 2024, "In 2023, the employment rate in domestic distribution channels increased by 95%. The daily trip count rose to 1,500. In 2023, the sectors we served the most in domestic distribution were Textile, White Goods, Electronics, and FMCG. We expect the daily trip count to rise to 1,750 in 2024, with employment increasing by 20%. In 2023, in line with our customers' needs, we opened 8 new storage and distribution centers for domestic distribution channels. We will open 7 more depots in 2024. In 2024, we want to increase our partial distribution volume and the number of provincial distributions in domestic distribution. We will focus on AVM distribution, return logistics, as well as the white goods, electronics, and furniture sectors. We will continue to grow and invest in 2024."

Sustainability efforts continue

In addition to publishing a Sustainability Report in 2023, Mars Logistics, which earned the ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certificate for Balance, Hadımköy, Tepeören, and Tuzla 2 Logistics Centers, certified its renewable energy by renewing IREC – 2023-2024 and ranked above average with a B level in the SRD assessment conducted by Crif Turkey for Fortune 500 in terms of sustainability performance, continues its sustainability efforts in every area of the company.

The way is open for women at Mars

Günhan underscored that gender roles will change further in the future, and the company will continue to work towards this, "Mars Logistics, valuing gender equality and advocating equality in every area of the company, has been conducting awareness activities both inside and outside the company through its project Gender Equality Has No Gender initiated in 2021. Through this project, which includes many activities, Mars aims to break stereotypes in the logistics sector, known as a male-dominated sector, and supports women in truck driving. In recent years, we accepted individuals interested in the truck driving profession but lacking the necessary training and documents, regardless of gender, into our Mars Driver Academy. Currently, including academy graduates, we have a total of 30 female truck drivers. Being a pioneer in the employment of female truck drivers in the sector and setting an example for other companies is a great pride for us." Currently, Mars Logistics has a total of 1,236 truck drivers, including 30 women, and aims to reach 1,500 by 2024.
