While linguists reveal that those who grew up or lived in countries where more than one language is spoken are advantageous when learning a second language, some countries offer the most suitable environment for language learning thanks to the importance they give to language education. According to the World Language Index study, in which 30 countries are evaluated based on 18 criteria, Luxembourg ranks first in the list of the most suitable countries to learn a language.

TURKEY - In an academic article published in 2012, Linguist Li Wei concluded that those who grew up or lived in a multilingual environment are more advantageous when learning a second language. This has made countries where more than one foreign language is spoken and attentive to language learning more convenient to learn a foreign language. Preply, which operates in the field of online language learning, evaluated 30 countries on 18 criteria and listed the countries that offer the most suitable environment for language learning. In the research published under the name of the World Language Index, it was revealed that Luxembourg, which started to provide education in its own language to students who grew up in different cultures from an early age, is the country that offers the most suitable environment for language learning.

It was noted that the education system in Luxembourg, which has three official languages, German, French and Luxembourgish, is designed in these three languages. On the other hand, while it is known that English is taught in schools, it was stated that students can choose different elective courses such as Italian lessons, Spanish lessons and Chinese lessons.

Official languages, languages spoken, TV access, use of subtitles assessed

30 countries were evaluated on criteria such as the number of officially recognized and spoken languages, household access to TV, and the use of subtitles or dubbing. The scores of each country from different criteria were standardized, and average scores were determined based on this standard. Accordingly, Luxembourg was followed by Sweden, Southern Cyprus, Malta and Denmark among the countries that stood out with their supportive environment in language learning in the study, in which the USA, Canada and European Union countries were evaluated on 18 criteria gathered in 7 groups.

Preply Europe Regional Manager Mustafa Ali Sivişoğlu, who shared his evaluations on the subject, said, “Spending time in a country where more than one language is spoken means interacting in different languages. This plays an important role in increasing cognitive competencies. Therefore, some countries offer a more conducive environment for language learning than others.”

With 335 languages, the USA is the country where the most languages are spoken

One of the criteria evaluated in the World Language Index research was the number of languages actively spoken in the country. According to these data, the USA took the lead among the top 10 countries with 335 languages, followed by Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Italy. Pointing out that second language competence is also essential for a country to leave other countries behind in terms of language learning, Preply Europe regional manager Mustafa Ali Sivişoğlu said, “94% of children in Sweden and all children in Luxembourg start learning a foreign language in primary school. Since language learning is so much related to analytical competencies and creates a way of understanding the world in the human mind, starting early is a huge advantage later on. On the other hand, television culture and preferences such as subtitles, dubbing and voice-over while watching TV also affect the language learning environment of countries.

“Online language learning platforms are a powerful alternative”

Noting that one of the most important topics in the language learning process is to practice, Mustafa Ali Sivişoğlu concluded his evaluations with the following statements, “We observe that in today's conditions, going abroad to learn a language has become difficult for many people due to the increasing costs. At this point, online language learning options, which are predicted to reach a market value of 32 billion dollars with 20% growth every year until 2029, should not be ignored.
