TURKEY - Turkish youth continue to achieve success abroad. Berrak Pınar Uluer and Selin Helvacıoğlu, were selected for the Royal Foundation Value-Based Youth Leadership Program for their work within the scope of the Swedish Turkish Youth Federation (Turkiska Ungdomsförbundet | TUF), which carries out activities for young people as part of the Turkish diaspora in Sweden, successfully completed the training and received a diploma. Berrak Pınar Uluer, who works in the field of linguistics, and Selin Helvacıoğlu, who continues her education in one of the most successful faculties in the field of dentistry in the country, presented their diplomas to the King of Sweden Carl Gustaf at the ceremony held on May 15 at the Royal Palace Bernadotte Library.
Alçın Mutlu Light, Secretary General of the Swedish Turkish Youth Federation, which has been operating since 1995 with the aim of gathering the Turkish youth in Sweden under one roof, said in a statement on the subject, “The selection of the young people operating within the federation to the leadership program organized by the Royal Foundation and the program successfully completed. Completion is very valuable to us. We are trying to strengthen the Turkish youth in Sweden with our integration-centred works and contribute to their prominence in every aspect of society. We believe that strong and educated Turkish youth, who can effectively apply democratic values in social life and reflect this on their leadership competencies, will make a name for themselves in Sweden in the future as well as today.
The Royal Foundation Value-Based Young Leadership Program focuses on young people who embrace the values of scouting, where leadership is at the forefront, and demonstrate these through their work in order to build a better society. Approximately 100 people were selected this year for the program, which is applied by more than a thousand candidates every year. Among them were Berrak Pınar Uluer and Selin Helvacıoğlu from the independent non-governmental organization TUF, which includes nearly 20 associations in Sweden.
Berrak Pınar Uluer expressed his thoughts on the subject as follows, “After completing my undergraduate education at Boğaziçi University, I came to Sweden in 2017 to continue my studies in linguistics and bilingualism. I worked as a research assistant at Uppsala University and started teaching English at educational institutions at different levels. I'm really happy to be at this point right now. I believe that a world is possible where immigrant communities can overcome barriers and have their voices heard when it comes to their rights. I aim to continue my career in academia by doing a doctorate.”
Selin Helvacıoğlu said, “I came to Sweden when I was still in high school. I continue my education in the dental department of Karolinska Institute. I am proud to represent the Turkish youth in Sweden under such a program. As I mentioned in my speech at the graduation ceremony, we learned in this program that a real leader has the qualities of taking the initiative, taking courage, and openly sharing shortcomings and feelings. With the gains I have made in this program, I aim to continue my career at the university and contribute to the literature with my academic studies.”
