While 95% of the hair salon market, which is expected to exceed 54 billion dollars by 2027, is composed of female hairdressers, attention is drawn to the fact that male employees in the sector are more than women. Esra Selçukkaya, trainer and hair stylist, who established the academy with the aim of increasing the number of female employees, explains the hair care industry's scorecards of both consumers and operators.

ISTANBUL (TR) - The "do it yourself, design it yourself" trend that rises during the pandemic period in hair care is lagging behind. The fact that people entrust their hair to professionals again after restrictions triggers the growth of the industry. According to the data published by Market Watch, the hair salon market, which was worth 50 billion dollars in 2021, will reach 2027. Trainer and hair stylist Esra Selçukkaya, who said that 95% of the market consists of women's hairdressers and 5% of men's salons, announced that they established an academy with the aim of increasing the number of female employees, thus increasing the scorecard of both the consumer and the operator of the hair care industry.

Esra Selçukkaya stated that although it is easier to care for hair at home, it is difficult for people to create a hairstyle suitable for their facial features by themselves. It takes up to 5 hours. The fact that women spend more time on their hair increases the number of hairdressing salons targeting women. However, the difficulties and changing trends of the hairdressing profession lead women to more practical jobs. This triggers male employment in the sector, leaving female hairdressers in minority.”

Women are in demand for nail and makeup art

Noting that women have been in demand for business lines such as nail and make-up art in the personal care industry, trainer and hair stylist Esra Selçukkaya said, “The fact that the number of female masters in hairdressing is decreasing day by day, in fact, heralds that there will be difficulties in the employment of female hair stylists in the future and that there will be gaps in this business line. Considering that most of the successful hairdressers, who are already known globally, are men, it causes the perception of hair care and style to change and women's tastes in hair care and beauty are not taken into account. This is exactly why talented women need to be supported by the right knowledge and experience, and brought to the sector. As the only female trainer in our country who has an international certificate in the sector with my teaching certificates from leading institutions in the world, I am adding a new one to my studies on this subject every day.”

Bringing new talents to the sector with its hair and make-up academy

Esra Selçukkaya, who thinks that the lack of sectoral knowledge should be eliminated while raising talented employees for the sector, said, “The way to survive in the intense competition environment in hair beauty and care and to be an expert in the field is to receive multi-faceted training. Together with my team, we are expanding the make-up academy we established a while ago, with the hair academy, on the way we set out with the motto 'your hair is our art'. In this way, we ensure that our young colleagues have sufficient competence to develop themselves. We especially support female candidates,” she said.

Lifestyle is analyzed before hair is done

Stating that she specializes in make-up as well as hair, trainer and hair stylist Esra Selçukkaya told, “I am constantly enriching my activities in the field of image consultancy and training, based on the experiences and successes I have gained in my 23-year career. Together with my team of professional hair artists, we serve by prioritizing the customer experience. We analyze the lifestyle of our customers, the frequency of going to the hairdresser, and their plans for the future, and offer them the healthiest and most accurate applications.
