While the demand for essential oils, which has a place in various aromatherapy applications with beauty and self-care habits, increases, fake production is also becoming widespread. Differences in the prices of essential oils on the market also strengthen the possibility of counterfeit products. Stating that essential oils do not leave any stains or marks, industry professionals draw attention to the fact that the napkin method will detect whether the products are fake or not.

ISTANBUL (TR) - In parallel with the rising wellness trend, the increase in personal care practices triggers different sectors' growth. Essential oils used in various aromatherapy applications expand their market with increasing demand. The essential oils market, which also has a place in medical treatments, is expected to reach the limit of 27 billion dollars by the end of 2022. As the demand for essential oils increases, counterfeit production is also widespread.

Stating that varieties such as lavender, lemon, orange, niaouli, tea tree, and rosemary are among the most used essential oils in the world, Talya Turkey and America Group of Companies Chairman of the Board M. Halis Ertaş warned, “Rising demand has spread fake ingredients that contain harmful additives. With a simple application defined as the napkin method, it can be understood whether the products are fake or not. Essential oils do not leave marks and stains. If a trace remains on the napkin 1-2 minutes after dropping a few drops of essential oil onto the napkin, the product is fake. The best way to protect yourself from counterfeit products is to choose brands that have proven themselves and have strong references.”

1 kg of oil from 5 tons of leaves

Mentioning that essential oils, whose origins date back thousands of years, contain the essence of plants, M. Halis Ertaş said, “Essential oils obtained from different parts of plants, from flowers to tree bark, are found in small amounts in plants. Only 1 kg of rose oil is obtained from 5 tons of rose petals. Reasons such as the amount of the plant, seed, root, or fruit from which the essential oil is obtained in nature, the rate of essential oil it contains, and whether the raw material is imported or domestic can create price differences between products. There was a perception in the market that the price of imported products would be high. Very high-priced oils can be offered for sale under the name of imported products. However, Turkey has a vibrant flora with many medicinal and aromatic plant species. Local products that benefit from this richness of our country should be preferred.”

Lemon enhances focus, and lavender calms

Stating that essential oils with aromatherapeutic effects have taken their place in many treatments, beauty and care applications, M. Halis Ertaş, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Talya Turkey and America Group of Companies, said, “The application forms of essential oils include a diffuser, compress, mouthwash, massage, cream, shampoo, hair, and skin masks are also included. While lemon and orange oils come to the fore with their refreshing effects, lavender is used to combat problems such as sleep and stress with its calming effect. While lavender oil gives very successful results in wounds and burns, lavender oil of the genus Lavandula angustifolia is among the oils considered safe for children. Essential oils such as niaouli, tea tree, and rosemary have preventive effects on acne and pimple formation. Thyme essential oil is used in colds. While such oils are frequently preferred in foot and skincare, they create a diffuser effect with their scent. While lemon increases focus, rose and lavender scents create a feeling of serenity and calmness.”

Use in high doses can cause allergic effects!

Stating that essential oils are mixed with beeswax and moisturizing creams in beauty and care applications, M. Halis Ertaş said, “Although such uses are healthy, they can also contain various risks. Moisturizing cream formulas can be created by mixing the appropriate amount with beeswax or any cream. It can cause adverse and allergic effects when used in high doses. For this reason, it should be applied by diluting in the right proportions. A specialist should be consulted, especially when used in pregnant women and children!”
