Times Higher Education (THE), which evaluates universities worldwide within the scope of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, has published the 2022 Impact Ranking. In the list where the sensitivity of universities to global issues and their sustainability activities were evaluated, 58 universities from Turkey and 7 universities from Ankara took place.

ISTANBUL (TR) - Times Higher Education, which evaluates higher education institutions around the world, has published the 2022 results of the Impact Ranking prepared within the scope of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research, published for the fourth time this year, examined the activities of universities in terms of sustainability and environmental impacts. 58 universities from Turkey were among the 1,406 universities evaluated with 17 criteria: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, Quality Education, and Partnerships for Purposes. Established in 2009 by the Turkish Education Association, TED University increased its score to 59.9, increasing 22%, making it the foundation university with the highest global impact in Ankara.

Sharing his evaluations on the subject, TED University Rector Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu said, “This year, as TED University, we ranked 23rd in the ranking, including 58 universities from Turkey, leaving behind 4 universities compared to the previous year. While it is ranked 8th among foundation universities in Turkey, we maintained our first place among the 3 foundation universities that participated in the ranking from Ankara, just like last year. We represent our country on international platforms with this success we achieved in the only global performance table that evaluates universities within the scope of Sustainable Development Goals.”

Although the number of universities increased, their ranking did not change.

Last year, 1,117 universities participated, and 1,406 universities were evaluated this year. Although the number of universities included in the ranking increased by about 30%, TED University managed to maintain its place in the global index. Noting that their ranking in the 601-800 band has not changed, Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu said, “The preparatory work we have carried out in the last two years increases our flexibility to reach the next level of success. To put it in numbers, we can easily rise to the 401-600 band with an increase of 5 points. Last year, we were evaluated with 6 Sustainable Development Goals and 7 this year. We maintained our ranking in the 201-300 band with a 10% point increase by showing the highest performance in the Qualified Education criterion number four. In the title of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which we have just included in the evaluation this year, we achieved a remarkable momentum and took place in the 301-400 ranking band with 60 points. Even though there is a relative decrease in the headings of Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Reducing Inequalities, Partnerships for Purposes, we have managed to raise our overall score.”

Among the top 300 universities in the world in the title of Quality Education

Pointing out that the increase in the number of SDGs submitted for evaluation can be considered as proof that TED University's sustainable development-oriented activities have started to be visible in different fields, TED University Rector Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu concluded his views with the following statements: “We were ranked 17th among 38 universities in Turkey under the title of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which we were evaluated for the first time this year. While being shown among the top 300 universities globally in the Quality Education category, we ranked 16th among 50 universities in Turkey. As TED University, we declared our commitment to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Agenda in October 2021 and committed to carrying out our activities according to the Sustainable Development Goals. With this in mind, we are confident that we will push forward our achievements in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for years to come."
