ISTANBUL (TR) - Millions of tons of waste continue to be produced every year worldwide. Waste that is not managed or recycled safely causes permanent damage in all areas where we carry out our vital activities, such as air, land and water. According to the data from the World Bank, 2.01 billion tons of urban waste is produced annually on a global scale. While the figures published by Statista, analyzed by the Online Bulletin and PR Service B2Press, indicate that this rate will increase by 69% until 2050, reaching approximately 3.4 billion tons, East Asia and the Pacific are among the regions that produce the most urban waste, contrary to popular belief.
While many factors lead to an increase in waste, mainly population growth and urbanization, high-income countries that make up 16% of the world's population continue to produce approximately 34% of global waste. According to the data analyzed by Online PR Service B2Press, China, the world's most populous country, ranks first with 15% of global urban waste production, followed by America, which makes up 5% of the worldwide population with 12%. The Global Waste Index results conducted by Sensoneo in 38 countries reveal the ranking of countries in waste production from 2019 to 2022. According to the report, our country falls to the last place by falling two more steps in 2022 than in 2019. Latvia, Chile and Mexico follow it. South Korea, Denmark, and Germany stand out as the least waste production countries.
While waste production increases every year, hazardous wastes continue to harm the environment, and 33% of the wastes produced worldwide are not managed safely. According to the analysis of Bulletin and Online PR Service B2Press, 13 tons of hazardous waste is generated every second around the world, and this rate corresponds to 400 million tons per year. Countries that are sensitive to nature and the environment are accelerating their recycling projects in waste production. The figures indicate that the smart waste generation management market will be worth $3.14 billion by 2023. Within the scope of waste recycling, South Korea ranks first with 60.8%, Germany with 47.8%, Slovenia with 45%, and Turkey recycles only 11% of its waste.
