ISTANBUL (TR) - World Book Day, pioneered by UNESCO, is celebrated for the 27th time on April 23 this year, while the global book industry continues to grow day by day. According to the data published by Grand View Research on the subject, the global book industry, which reached 132.1 billion dollars in 2020, saw 138.4 billion in 2021. The industry is expected to reach $159.3 billion by 2028, with an average compound growth rate of 2.4% each year. According to the studies reviewed by the online PR service B2Press, in parallel with the increase in the book industry, it is observed that approximately 1.5 million new books were published worldwide in 2021. Although technology is penetrating our daily lives more and more, the popularity of printed books continues and while e-book sales are decreasing by 8%, interest in printed books is increasing day by day.

Most read country: India!

The effect of the pandemic restrictions on the increase in interest in reading in the past period stands out. Online Newsletter and PR Service B2Press's reviews show that one out of every three (35%) people started reading more because of the pandemic. Asia, where the coronavirus emerged, is also home to those who read the most in the pandemic. India, Thailand and China, which are in the top ranks of the countries that read the most books, seem to maintain their top position in 2021 as well. In the European ranking, Finland takes the first place, followed by Poland and Estonia. While it is determined that the USA reads 25% more in 2021 compared to the previous year, it is stated that those in Europe spend at least one hour a day reading a book.

Millennials are always reading more

Based on the 2020 - 2021 data, the studies in which the Online PR Service B2Press examines reading habits draw attention to the fact that the Z generation increased the frequency of reading during the epidemic compared to other generations, but it is noted that the millennial generation always reads more. While the Z generation usually chooses the books they read through social media, the X prefers to follow the bestseller lists. While 61% of readers in both generations choose to read non-fiction books, romance, science fiction and inspirational themes stand out most in fiction books.
