ISTANBUL (TR) - The report, published by the Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TÜSEV), was prepared under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ali Çarkoğlu and Assoc. Dr. Selim Erdem Aytaç from Koç University Center for Civil Society and Philanthropy Research. The report was prepared as a result of face-to-face interviews with a total of 1734 people in 143 districts of Turkey's 49 provinces, considering the last one-year period from October-November 2021. The report reveals how developments in Turkey reflect on individuals' donation practices, philanthropy perceptions, and in this context, their relations with NGOs.
According to the results of the report, the first of which was published in 2006 and which is the only source monitoring the field of individual donation in Turkey, individual donation and philanthropy practices have gained a positive momentum compared to previous years. The total per capita value of all aid and donations made in a year in Turkey is calculated as approximately 983 TL according to the results of the research. In addition to the increase in the rate of those who prefer to make their donations through an organization, there is an increase in the participation rates of individuals in different types of civil society activities. The work of individuals and NGOs against the negative effects of COVID-19, the initiatives to eliminate the damage caused by the natural disasters in the fieldwork, also the aid and philanthropy activities witnessed due to the forest fires in the summer of 2021 are thought to be effective in this increase.
According to the report data, the fact that individuals do not prefer to make their donations through an organization is largely related to meeting the needy and the amount they will donate. Trust in institutions and transparency of institutions are among the issues that affect the preferences of those who donate through an institution. While it is stated that the most determining factor of people's donations is trust and the use of donations according to their purpose, it is generally accepted to provide information and feedback on the use of donations. In the first place among the notification methods, it is preferred to be contacted by SMS (49%) and by phone (35%).
In the introductory meeting, where the report data was evaluated with the participation of Prof. Dr. Ali Çarkoğlu and Assoc. Dr. Selim Erdem Aytaç and experts from the field of civil society took place online on April 14. Speaking about the results of the report at the meeting, TÜSEV General Secretary Rana Kotan drew attention to the fact that since its establishment, TÜSEV has contributed to the work of the civil society in a more favorable environment by producing permanent solutions to the problems faced by NGOs, and in this context, it aims to increase individual donations in Turkey. She stated that The Individual Donation and Philanthropy Report, which is the only resource in its field in Turkey, will be prepared every three years to closely follow the changes in the field of donation and to monitor the reflections of the changes that occur locally and globally.
