The pandemic has increased the demand for second-hand shelves
The pandemic has increased the demand for second-hand shelves

The increasing costs of companies in the pandemic have increased the demand for the second-hand shelf systems market. Metal and steel shelves, which have completed their life, are prepared in accordance with the customer's demand to be reused with the power of engineering instead of being melted in recycling facilities with other wastes. Shelves, which are recovered much faster and more cost-effectively than the production of shelves from scratch, bring cost savings and flexibility to companies.

ISTANBUL (TR) - The amount of waste generated by the increasing production and industrial activities in Turkey is also increasing. According to the current statistics published by TURKSTAT, approximately 105 million tons of waste was generated in manufacturing industry and mining enterprises, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones, health institutions and households. While processing and recycling rates increased by 22%, 20.5% of the waste was made up of metal, paper, plastic and household waste. Metal and steel shelves, which are the raw materials of the second-hand shelf systems market, are reshaped with engineering power without harming the environment, instead of being melted with other wastes and brought into production.

Emphasizing that the melting of shelf systems made of metal and steel with other wastes in recycling facilities creates a serious cost and environmental pollution, Zem Raf Founder and General Manager Emre Akmeşe said, “Melting second-hand shelving systems at the facilities eliminates the market-oriented raw material status, although it provides recycling. As Zem Raf, we have created the infrastructure of the second hand shelf sector by recycling more than 5 thousand tons of steel per year. With a robust and reliable construction, we offer much faster and more cost-effective production than from scratch. Shelves, which are evaluated as waste, bring flexibility while reducing the costs of companies. The year 2021, which passed with the pandemic, directed companies to the second hand shelf market due to the increasing costs. We increased our machinery investment and digitization steps to respond to demands more quickly.”

Supports environmental sustainability

Emphasizing the importance of recycling activities in terms of reducing the carbon footprint, Zem Raf Founder and General Manager Emre Akmeşe said, “Greenhouse gas, which emerges at all stages such as the extraction, transportation, processing, production and distribution of raw materials, poses a great danger to the sustainable environment. Studies show that using recycled aluminum to make a tin can emits 95% less greenhouse gases than making tin from scratch. Producing one ton of aluminum from scratch creates 17 tons more greenhouse gases than producing aluminum from recycling. Under a scenario that limits global warming to below 2˚C, it is estimated that 360 million tons of aluminum, 90 million tons of copper and 30 million tons of nickel will be needed in the world in the next 20 years. When evaluated from this perspective, we serve the targets of reducing the carbon footprint of our country by supporting environmental sustainability with recycling activities.”

It does not even leave a trace of transformation in nature.

Emphasizing that they reshape the unused shelves in the warehouses to be sent to the recycling facilities and turn them into a value-added product, Emre Akmeşe made the following statement on the subject: “Within the scope of the activities we have been carrying out for 3 years, we have been purchasing the used shelf systems of the companies through tenders and bringing them into production. With our environment-oriented approach, we repair, redesign or renew the shelves without leaving any traces of transformation in nature. Thus, shelves that have completed their lifespan can be used for many more years instead of harming the environment. Since we focus on the needs in the recycling process, we bring companies together with the most suitable solutions compared to new shelves. By using our engineering power, we offer the products that we have gone through the stages of detailed exploration and expertise, disassembly, project design, maintenance-repair and revision, production and assembly, for sale in Turkey and international markets.”

Increasing demands brought 100% growth

Emre Akmeşe, who said that the increasing demands of companies in 2021 brought about 100% growth, said, “In our journey that started with 4 people as the founder of the second hand shelf market, we reached a workforce of more than 45 and maintained our leading position in the sector. We also expanded our export network with the products we transformed in our 9 thousand square meter facility. 2021 has been a year in which we completed 80% of our digital transformation. We have matured our projects for online markets by developing our machinery and logistics network using advanced technologies. In 2022, we plan to generate at least 30% of our turnover from exports, and to return from foreign fairs we will attend with new agreements. Increasing our machinery investments and production capacity is also among our long-term investment targets.”
