ISTANBUL (TR) - According to the data of the World Health Organization (WHO), 60% to 85% of the people living in the world do not do enough physical activity and lead a sedentary lifestyle. Studies show that the sedentary style, which expresses a life based on laziness, has increased due to the changing dietary habits in the pandemic. Experts say that in this process, the changes in sleep patterns and the decrease in physical activities, as well as the snacks that are frequently consumed at home, trigger the spread of a sedentary lifestyle. The “Coronavirus Pandemic and Community Research” conducted by Ipsos reveals that 60% of Turkey has gained weight with the sedentary lifestyle that has become widespread in the pandemic. Stating that the sedentary lifestyle, where physical activity is almost non-existent, brings excess weight with it, Dietician Gözde Karaca Kayan said, “Our patients In our research, we have seen that there is an increase in the consumption of sedentary life and foods such as delicatessen products, fatty cheeses, ready-made packaged foods, fries and sweets. On the other hand, consumption of pulpy foods, which help the feeling of fullness with physical activity, decreased to the lowest levels.

Emotional eating behavior has become more frequent

Saying that emotional eating behaviors have increased as a result of the stress and anxiety created by the pandemic, Gözde Karaca Kayan said, “Our research shows that we find the solution to cope with negative emotions in foods with excess carbohydrates, sugar and oil. On the other hand, we found that there was a noticeable increase in the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and anti-inflammatory spices such as ginger and turmeric, which support our immune system. We have seen that children who have never consumed fruit before have gained the habit of eating fruit in this process.”

It is necessary to support the body's fight against viruses

Gözde Karaca Kayan, drawing attention to the role of regular exercise, quality sleep, adequate and balanced nutrition and protection of body resistance in controlling the pandemic, said, “The pandemic has shown that we should adopt a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. In this process, we should also make it a habit to use vitamin D, which is recommended against lung infection. We should strengthen our immunity with regular intake of prebiotics and probiotics and a diet containing zinc. We should support our body's fight against viruses with foods rich in antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E such as citrus fruits, nuts such as walnuts, almonds, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, cheese, and carrots.”

It is important to consume enough water for toxins and harmful substances!

Noting that vitamin and mineral supplements should be used under the control of experts, the Dietitian added, “Adequate water consumption is of great importance in order to purify our body of toxins and harmful substances that occur with vitamin and mineral supplements.”
