England officially left the EU on January 31, 2020. In England, which applies the European Union (EU) norms in trade relations between countries, some uncertainties have emerged due to Brexit. Many companies engaged in cross-border e-commerce or e-export to the UK started to wonder how Brexit would affect their sales. Nart said that in the World E-Commerce Forum, which WORLDEF will organize jointly with the Department for International Trade on April 15, 2020, the new situation brought by the coronavirus will be discussed together with Brexit.

“The standards of e-export products will change”

Ömer Nart, recalling Brexit process after the Turkey-exports to the United Kingdom to do some of the technical regulations and customs regulations, standards related to the products to be offered through e-export to the British market may change, he said. Nart noted the following; "There are many companies that trade relations with Britain with companies from Turkey. Our trade through cross-border e-commerce is showing an increasing momentum apart from traditional trade. However, Brexit will be a new beginning for companies that e-export to or want to do so. While cross-country e-commerce is being made to this country at EU standards, the rules of the game are changing now. I believe that Britain will take objective and constructive steps in this change process.”

“It is necessary to evaluate Brexit transition period very well”

Evaluating the Brexit transition period as a critical process, WORLDEF Chairman continued as follows: “In the new process, some arrangements will be made in customs and logistics applications. It is necessary to evaluate Brexit transition period very well and to keep up with the new commercial structure according to the regulations to be made. There is a 10-month period for the transition period to end. So we will see new e-export rules in the UK in 2021. It is important for every e-export company acting in the UK market to act with foresight.”

WORDLEF Chairman Nart made the following suggestions to e-export companies targeting the UK market; “Companies focusing on the UK market will need to take proactive steps in cross-border e-commerce operations after Brexit. Preparing for this process will reduce the disadvantages of e-export companies and provide a competitive advantage. My advice to e-export companies; By following the Brexit process well, they adapt quickly to the new process. In particular, it is necessary to consider the logistics and customs processes. Marketing campaigns should also be reviewed. Companies that can adapt flexibly and quickly to new e-export arrangements after Brexit will be more advantageous. Thus, they can become players in the UK market.”
