A popular destination for health tourism, Turkey has drawn 1.4 million foreign visitors in the last two years alone. Boasting world-renowned doctors and well-equipped medical facilities, the Turkish health sector is expected to expand even further in the years ahead.

New York (USA) - Turkey’s health sector has advanced dramatically over the last 20 years, with several new medical facilities and rapidly increasing bed capacity. The country is also home to a number of highly-trained doctors in a range of specialties, from eye and heart surgery to obesity treatment.

Obesity has become one of the 21st century’s most serious health problems, with the number of cases having tripled worldwide since 1980. Turkey, meanwhile, has distinguished itself in the field of bariatric surgery, providing advanced obesity treatments by highly-qualified specialists.

Turkey: A leader in bariatric surgery

Most Turkish medical specialists now receive training at the international level. Earlier this year, Turkey’s medical sector marked a major milestone when Dr. Gürdal Ören became the country’s first Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Ören received the prestigious designation from the Surgical Review Corporation, a US-based patient-safety agency that accredits medical professionals and facilities in terms of reliability and competence.

Turkey’s ‘Dr. Now’

Dr. Ören has been described by some as “Turkey’s Dr. Nowzaradan.” Popularly known as “Dr. Now,” Dr. Nowzaradan is an Iranian-American surgeon, author and television host who has helped thousands of people overcome morbid obesity.

Like Dr. Nowzaradan, Turkey’s Dr. Ören is one of the few doctors in the world to have successfully performed over 1,500 gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) procedures. “Turkey is now considered a leader in the field of obesity surgery,” Ören says proudly. “This is due largely to our extensive post-surgery follow-ups with our patients, wherever they are in the world.”

Ören: Obesity cases rising ‘day by day’

“As Turkey's first accredited Master Surgeon, I can safely say that obesity now represents one of the world’s most serious health concerns, with the number of cases rising day by day,” Ören says. “Obesity reduces fertility rates, both for women and men, and can also lead to serious conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and sleep disorders.”

Ören is currently treating obesity patients from all over the world. “My team includes a certified anesthesiologist, two bariatric dietitians, and other healthcare professionals, along with translators who let us communicate with our patients, regardless of the language they speak,” he says.

Competitive prices

Not only can Turkish medical specialists provide world-class health services, but they can do so at highly competitive prices, offering patients a range of advanced treatments at much lower cost than their western counterparts.
