The hectic pace of daily life, starting with an alarm sound and often ending with it, makes falling asleep a challenging struggle. A computer engineer entrepreneur, with his alarm clock program, helps users discipline their day. Through a research study, he revealed the sleep habits of users from various regions of Türkiye, ranked 45th worldwide with an average wake-up time of 8:00 AM.
In the fast-paced day, the alarm sound from electronic devices often signals the end of sleep and the beginning of a new rush for many people. About 75% of children and 70% of adults always keep electronic devices in their bedrooms or beds to set alarms. However, these devices not only directly affect our sleep quality but also may not always be effective in waking us up. Computer engineer Burak Özdemir, with his alarm clock program, has ended the great struggles of waking up in the morning, and through an online survey, revealed the sleep habits of users from different regions of Türkiye, ranked 45th worldwide for the average wake-up time of 8:00 AM.
According to a survey conducted by onlinealarmkur.com with 1,145 participants, over 60% of whom are individuals under the age of 18, the most preferred time range for going to bed is 11:00 PM to 11:59 PM. The Gen Z group also mostly goes to sleep during these hours and wakes up between 7:00 AM and 7:59 AM. Individuals under 18 typically go to bed between 10:00 PM and 10:59 PM, following the waking times of the older generation.
Burak Özdemir, Founder of onlinealarmkur.com, shared his assessment of the survey: “We observe that sleep habits vary according to age groups and regions. The data shows that individuals under 18 generally go to bed earlier, while in metropolitan areas, there’s a tendency to stay up later, especially after midnight. The most notable finding is that the 7:00 AM to 7:59 AM range is the most common wake-up time for all groups. This indicates that work and education life play a major role in shaping sleep patterns.”
The survey findings also indicate that sleep habits vary by age group and region. Residents of the Marmara region tend to stay awake until later hours, with the majority of them choosing to go to bed between 12:00 AM and 12:59 AM. Participants from Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia typically go to bed as early as 10:00 PM or as late as 12:00 AM. Specifically, in large cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Bursa, the tendency to go to bed after midnight is higher. Burak Özdemir stated:
“As we turn towards the East, we observe that citizens tend to start their day earlier. This shows that regional norms play a significant role in our sleep patterns. In addition to work and education, even the time when the sun rises influences our sleep habits. At onlinealarmkur.com, we have focused on understanding the sleep patterns of different age groups and regions, so we can develop more personalized solutions on our platform.”
Burak Özdemir, the Founder of onlinealarmkur.com, shared that the story of their platform goes back to his student years: “It all started years ago when I struggled with waking up in the mornings during my student years. I tried various alarm types to solve this issue. However, these experiences mostly ended in failure, with missed events being added to the list. As a computer engineer, I decided to create my own alarm clock program. This completely free program offers various options and allows users to close their eyes peacefully,” he said, and added:
“To better understand our users' sleep patterns, we conducted a survey through our website to gauge the pulse of our community. Nearly 51% of the participants were male, and close to 40% were female. The demographic distribution, excluding the approximately 10% who did not specify their gender, shows that there are not significant differences in sleep patterns between genders. Additionally, most of our participants are from cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Kocaeli, Bursa, and Konya, indicating that the people who need alarms the most live in busy cities. We know this is largely due to factors like traffic, work, or school distance. For this reason, we continue to work on providing more customizable solutions on our platform and developing systems that will appeal to different lifestyles."
