ISTANBUL (TR) - With the spread of digitalization, the shift of interpersonal communication to mobile applications or social media platforms opens the door to expressing emotions and thoughts through emojis. According to the research of Unicode, reviewed by Online Bulletin and PR Service B2Press, 92% of internet users use more than 5 billion emojis every day while communicating. The top 5 most used emojis around the world are red heart, 2 laughing faces, thumbs up sign and loudly crying face. They are followed by a hands pressed together sign and 4 smiling faces. The pleading face emoji, the usage of which has increased by 90% since 2019, is also preparing to enter the top 10 in the new year.

Smiling and pleading faces are among the most used icons in Turkey While sports emojis are mostly used on social media platforms that feed on the interests of users, these are football, basketball and volleyball ball, boxing glove and swimmer emojis. Birthday cake, coffee, chocolate, candy and shortcake emojis are preferred when describing food and drinks.

According to the survey data announced by the online PR service B2Press, 71% of the respondents think that emojis lead to positive discussions about cultural and social issues, while 73% say that using emoji in their messages makes them feel cooler, friendly and fun. While 83% of those who want to be able to express their feelings and thoughts more easily stated that the current emojis should offer more representations of geographical and cultural differences, half of the people who say that these icons are insufficient, say that the emojis they use lead to misunderstandings. The top three of the most misunderstood emojis worldwide include cowboy face, cherries, and upside down face.
