As the business world experienced its most turbulent years globally, many businesses struggled with inflation, labor shortages and supply chain disruptions. The fact that cyber security was not among the priorities for companies in this period also increased ransomware attacks. Current data showed that the costs of ransomware attacks exceeded $5 million and that 4 out of 5 companies that were attacked and willing to pay were the target of a new cyberattack.

ISTANBUL (TR) - Digital transformation, which has gained a strong momentum in recent years, has brought new risks, while changing the way the modern workplace works. Today, businesses of all sizes integrating digital solutions and business software into their processes have also expanded the target areas of cybercriminals. The increasing complexity of ransomware attacks has also been among the results of new work trends. Global research by IBM, the world's largest information technology company, found that the cost of a ransomware attack exceeded $5 million, with an average ransom of $812,360 and additional losses exceeding $4.5 million.

Berqnet General Manager Hakan Hintoğlu commented, “Many businesses have been struggling with supply chain interruptions, labor problems and inflation for about 2.5 years. Cyber security is not in the first place next to these problems. However, cyber attacks also come with the risks of disrupting workflows, damaging brand reputation and stopping production. As seen in the report, ransomware attacks can also cause significant financial losses for businesses.”

Paying for ransom attacks is often not a solution

In the past two years, ransomware attacks have been among the most threatening forms of cyberattacks for businesses. Cybereason found that 80% of companies that were attacked and agreed to pay ransom were hacked one more time, 40% of those companies paid the ransom again, and 70% paid a higher amount. Pointing out that paying is often not a solution, Hakan Hintoğlu said, “Cyber criminals are just as unreliable as real-world criminals. Paying ransom amounts that vary depending on what data they manage to retrieve from company systems does not mean a reliable deal has been made. These people can sell their data on sharing platforms in the dark web and increase their earnings, and they can attack companies that they know about the vulnerability, leaving them in the same situation. Moreover, according to IBM's report, although these attacks are carried out in less than 4 days, it can take up to 326 days to be identified and responded to. Every business, of any scale, needs to take action without having to sit down with attackers.”

“End-to-end security solutions make it easy to monitor network traffic”

Berqnet General Manager Hakan Hintoğlu underlined that cyber attack activities can be understood from the anomalies seen in traffic in networks that are regularly and automatically monitored, and concluded his evaluations with the following statements: “Considering that small businesses are under twice as many threats as as large companies, we can say that all businesses regardless of scale or industry should take cybersecurity seriously. Fortunately, security solutions are being developed today that offer much more than the technology available to cyber attackers. As Berqnet, we enable businesses to protect their reputation end-to-end with our Secure Access Service (SASE) platform. Berqnet SASE users, which is a highly scalable platform, can monitor their network traffic at any time of the day and manage them from a single platform. By observing the movements of all devices and users connected to the network, Berqnet SASE can prevent threats before they arise. Berqnet SASE, which combines the preferred VPN solutions for firewall, software-defined wide area network, secure web gateway, zero trust architecture, threat prevention and remote secure access in a single solution, can be adapted to businesses of all sizes. Developed with 100% domestic R&D activities, Berqnet SASE also fully complies with the legislation in our country.”
