GENERAL

The work to prevent the damage caused by the possible Istanbul earthquake continues unabated. Finally, TED University's project entitled ”Evacuation Planning and Management of the Marmara Sea Coast of Istanbul Province Against the Tsunami Threat" was entitled to receive support from TÜBİTAK. Within the scope of the project, proposals for solutions to the tsunami disaster that may occur after the earthquake will also be developed.

ISTANBUL (TR) - The earthquake does not fall off the agenda of Istanbul at all. According to data published by Reuters, researchers estimate that there is a 70% probability of an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 or greater in 95 years. It is estimated that an earthquake of this magnitude will severely damage 194 thousand buildings and leave more than 10% of Istanbul's population homeless. The work to prevent the damage continues unabated. Finally, The project entitled “Marmara Sea Coast Evacuation Planning and Management of Istanbul Against the Tsunami Threat”, conducted by TED University (TEDU) Department of Industrial Engineering Faculty Member Dr. Vedat Bayram, was entitled to be supported for 36 months within the scope of the TÜBITAK

Evacuation signs are placed in many districts against the tsunami threat.

After the expected Istanbul earthquake, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is placing evacuation road signs in many districts against the possible tsunami risk. The signs, which were first placed in Büyükçekmece, will be located in 16 more districts. TED University Industrial Engineering Department Lecturer Dr. Vedat Bayram, on the other hand, describes his project developed for the possible tsunami risk after the earthquake with the following words:

“The project will reveal the safe evacuation of the population in the districts on the coast of the Marmara Sea and the most effective measures to be taken during the crisis against the tsunami threat that may arise as a secondary disaster after the Istanbul earthquake. Although this study is on evacuation planning and management policies to be developed to protect from tsunamis, the results of the project can also be used for other disasters frequently seen in our country or new types of disasters that may be seen due to global warming/climate change.”

The project is based on the evacuation planning and management optimizations during the tsunami

Within the framework of the project, the population at risk of tsunamis takes into account the traffic density, the confusion caused by pedestrian – vehicle interaction, Faculty Member Dr. Vedat Bayram mentioned the purpose of the project, saying that ”the project is pedestrian, vehicular”, has a scope that will develop evacuation planning and management optimization models and solution methods". Under the leadership of Dr. Vedat Bayram, the effects of the project, which will last for 36 months, are reflected in the T.C. "Liveable Cities, Sustainable Environment" and "Disaster Management", T.R. It is expected to contribute to the National Earthquake Strategy and Action Plan of the Ministry of Interior, Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, the United Nations Sustainable Development Tools and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
