Iraq plastprintpack continues to grow at the pace of 2021 market

Global leaders were among the participants of Iraq plastprintpack 2019. EREMA and Wittmann Battenfeld from Austria, Cantoni from Italy, Shanghai Jwell and Shanghai Jinhu Extrusion from China, IPS Integrated Packaging Systems from UAE, Remak Makina and Almas Film from Turkey, Arya Pu Pack Machine and also Iran's leading companies such as Apaden Plast, Isfahan Moghadam, Pamian Print, Pasargad Polymer, Poolad Injection Molding Machines, SLZ, Tak Packing, Ceiling Machine Pouya and Zarrin Nylon Parsian took place.

Since all the plastic raw materials used in Iraq are imported, the country promises great potential for commodity exporters. Between 2015 and 2019, Iraq's imports of plastics technology increased by 16.7% year-on-year to €39 million. The market, which is expected to grow steadily in the coming years, has made Iraq the third largest Arab importer of such technologies in the Middle East. Iraq, which has the same position in packaging technology imports with a volume of 78 million Euros, is also among the important buyers in the region for printing and paper converting technologies.

Iraq targets a moderate trade surplus in 2021

With exports of hydrocarbons worth US$34.3 billion and imports worth US$30.7 billion, Iraq is expected to achieve a trade surplus of US$3.7 billion in 2021. GDP is expected to grow by 1.1% in 2021 and 4.4% in 2022. (GTAI, May 2021)

Another important factor is that with a population of 41 million, Iraq is one of the three most populous countries in the Arab world after Egypt and together with Algeria. Its population is expected to reach 71 million by 2050. With 58% of the population under the age of 25, the country has an extremely young and promising population.

Iraqi agriculture + poultry

Iraq is the second largest agricultural machinery importer in the Middle East. It comes just after Saudi Arabia, and is ahead of Iran and the UAE. (VDMA) Iraqi Kurdistan's poultry industry has grown dramatically over the past five years. There are currently 2,000 chicken farms in the Kurdistan Region that produce around 190 tons of meat per year. Iraq is the main buyer of Kurdistan chicken. Businessmen and companies in the Kurdistan Region buy at least 100-130 thousand tons of live chickens from Kurdistan farms every year and send them alive to the rest of Iraq. Given an average price of 2,000 dinars per kilo, the trade is worth US$216 million. According to the official figures of the Iraqi Ministry of Trade and Industry, Iraq imports chickens from 19 countries, with the lion's share coming from Turkey, Brazil, USA and Ukraine.

Iraqi food + beverage technologies

Between 2015 and 2019, Iraq's imports of food and beverage process and packaging technology increased from 76 million euros to 145 million euros, with an annual growth rate of 17.5%. (VDMA) This makes Iraq the third largest Arab importer of such technologies in the Middle East. It is seen as a clear sign of the political will to expand local food production and the "Made in Iraq" trend. Continuous growth is expected to continue in the coming years.

Iraqi food ingredients

With a population of 41 million, Iraq has long been one of the three largest food markets in the Arab world after Egypt and on par with Algeria. Expenditure in the food and beverage sector is growing steadily, with food and beverage production taking up by far the largest portion of Iraq's processing industry. Accordingly, the demand for food and beverage ingredients is constantly increasing.
