Finally, the cement company Medcem, which has the largest cement factory in Turkey and Europe, announced that it will increase the capacity of its existing factory in Mersin from 3.5 million tons of clinker production to 6.5 million tons with a new investment of 210 million dollars. According to the information obtained from the company, Medcem Cement, whose total number of employees is 900 together with permanent subcontractors, will contribute significantly to employment with the investment it will realize. After the new investment, there will be a minimum 30% employment increase in the number of direct employees.

Sharing the details about the investment plan, Murat Kahya, General Manager of Medcem Cement, said, “We have completed all kinds of legal permission processes for the investment and we have agreed with German companies to purchase the necessary main equipment. Thus, we will start our production activities actively, and we will accelerate our construction works at the factory site. At the beginning of August 2021, we aim to focus on construction works and to complete the works that we will carry out on the axis of investment of 210 million dollars in 20 months. We will start production on the new production line in the first quarter of 2023.”

New terminal plan in the USA

Mentioning that they will also expand their overseas investments, Murat Kahya said, “We have grinding facilities in Cameroon and Tunisia, and cement terminals in Russia and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In the near future, we will launch a terminal in the United States, which is a very important market for us. We have started feasibility studies for the terminal investment in the USA, and we will conclude our negotiations on the new terminal soon.”

Kahya explained the future targets of Medcem Çimento as follows: “Our investment plans and works that we intend to start in the short term as a company continue at full speed. Although we are a young company, we are one of the most important players in the industry. We are the largest facility of our country and Europe in a single line. With our 210 million USD investment, we will achieve an approximately 90% capacity increase in our factory in Mersin.
