ISTANBUL (TR) - E-commerce data for the first six months of 2020 was announced by the Ministry of Commerce. The detailed report included many general and sectoral statistics on the growth of e-commerce in Turkey. One of the sectors featured in the report was the furniture and decoration sector. Home-garden products, including furniture and home textiles, increased by 95% in Internet shopping compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 2.1 billion liras.
Looking at the total rate of installment transactions on the basis of the sector, it was seen that 68% installments were made in the purchases of home furniture and decoration products. White goods came in second place with 45%, while clothing came in third place with 32%. In all internet purchases, installment payments accounted for 26% of the total payments.
Sharing data from the “The Role of Digital in Furniture Purchase” report prepared by Google, Murat Erat, the Founding Partner of Trend Furniture, said, “Consumers who shop for furniture online decide to buy faster than consumers who shop in stores. Online stores are preferred for furniture shopping, not only with the ease of product procurement but also with detailed research facilities such as price comparison, brand inquiry and viewing of consumer experiences. The orientation towards modern furniture in particular increased with the influence of young people. While 63% of internet furniture research results in a purchase within a week, the number of consumers making a decision to buy on the same day reaches 53%.”
Reminding that e-commerce volume reached 91 billion 700 million liras in the first half of the year, Murat Erat said, “Every year, more than 15 million consumers worldwide shop for furniture online. At the end of 2020, 9% of total revenue in the European furniture market is expected to come from online sales channels. Internet searches for product groups such as 'home furniture and decoration' have increased by more than 100% in recent years. The conditions also show that the furniture industry will grow in digital channels.”
Reminding that many people who work remotely and follow social isolation measures at home with the pandemic have made decorative innovations with the increase in their living spaces, Erat said, “During the pandemic, sales in the online furniture sector, except for decoration and garden products, increased 169% compared to the same period of the previous year. Modern furniture with minimal and simple design is more preferred in the decoration of living spaces. We anticipate that by the end of the year, online furniture shopping in Turkey will increase 2 times compared to 2019, especially with the contribution of modern furniture appreciation of the younger generation born into e-commerce.”
