ISTANBUL (TR) - Teyit, the verification platform that brought the first two books of the Verification Handbook series, edited by Craig Silverman, into Turkish, also translated the third book of the series “Verification Handbook on Disinformation and Media Manipulation” into Turkish. Crowning fourth year with a new project that will contribute to Turkey's media ecosystem in the fight against the spread of misinformation, Teyit's translation verification manual on disinformation and media manipulation focuses on the discovery of manipulated content and artificial mobility. The book also describes how research can be conducted with open sources on online accounts and social media platforms through case studies.
Published by the European Journalism Center (EJC) with the support of Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and containing articles by experienced teams such as Bellingcat, BuzzFeed News, Visual Social Media Lab and First Draft, Teyit also uses the seven misleading types of false information. Concepts such as distortion, imitation, inventing, incorrect association, and breaking out of context are explained. Media manipulation and methods used to detect disinformation, which means consciously producing and spreading false information are also included.
In the introduction to the work, Silverman, editor of the Verification Handbook, states that the book provides the fundamental theoretical knowledge, context and mindset that can lead journalists to do qualified work that enlightens the public, enable them to reveal malicious actors and contribute to the development of the knowledge ecosystem. Claire Wardle, one of the authors of the book, emphasizes that the age of information disorder creates new challenges for journalists and people working in the field and adds: “Is it communication or not? How should the title be represented? How to effectively disprove videos and images? How do we know when to refute? How can we measure the spill point? These are new challenges for everyone working in the information environment today. It's pretty complicated.”
Another focus of the book is social media accounts, bots, closed messaging applications, information operations organized for the purpose of spreading false information, deepfakes, which are frequently called artificial intelligence fraud, synthetic media and other forward-looking manipulation technologies. The study is valuable for journalists, academics working on the media and those who want to understand the information operations carried out on the internet in coordination.
With the translation of the third and newest book in the series, they aim to spread media literacy, convey methods of verification, and provide resources to journalists. Teyit Chief Editor Gülin Çavuş said “As Teyit, our goal is to prevent misinformation and contribute to the formation of a media and information ecosystem free from disinformation and manipulation. This, in turn, is only possible with the formation of an ecosystem that confirms, doubts and has high media literacy. Based on this, the third manual, which we have translated, is very important in terms of the insights on how effective both traditional and digital journalism techniques are when used together, and in particular how to access the primary source and conduct subtle and detailed research on the internet. At the same time, there are online tools and verification tips that users can immediately put into practice.”
Gülin Çavuş said “The availability of such a resource for everyone is part of our efforts to make an impact. In this context, the book can be accessed free of charge from the publications section on Teyit's website. In addition, based on the book, case studies and research methods are also covered in Teyit's podcast, T-Chart.”
